「要拿我以前的作品来做比较是件满困难的事」久石让曾如是说。从动画电影｢风之谷｣开始，创作了无数动人心弦的配乐作品的他，回首至今的音乐创作人生，他表示自己会将注意力集中在创作的当下，而非回顾他那变化多端又出众的创作生涯。「但是，像是在创作配乐时，我会确保自己已完全了解每个角色、故事跟画面后才会开始着手进行，而且我的写曲方式也会在动画与电影之间跟著作变化。至于个人作品的话，主题本身就存在于我体内。」这充分说明了为何久石让的音乐，能与每一部作品合为一体深植人心，并增添角色、故事的张力，让久石让获奖无数，成为亚洲最负盛名备受推崇的配乐大师。
本作｢Dream Songs: The Essential Joe Hisaishi｣（梦幻精粹久石让）是第一张叙说「久石让故事」的合辑。28首收录曲皆经由大师亲手重制，使不同时期的作品可以变成一张完整合辑，其中有些乐曲甚至不曾在日本之外的地区发行过。CD1着重在交响乐作品，其中包括1984年的「风之谷」「魔女宅急便」「神隐少女」等多首与宫崎骏合作的动画配乐，以及2008年曾荣获奥斯卡最佳外语片「送行者：礼仪师的乐章」的主题曲等等。CD2则着重在钢琴独奏及小型合奏曲，收录曲多来自早期与金奖导演北野武合作的电影配乐以及久石让其个人专辑，另外也收录了宫崎骏的「霍尔的移动城堡」「风之谷」「崖上的波妞」配乐。2CD藉由不同的形式演奏的呈现，完整展现久石让每一首经典的不凡。
