之后，舒曼与其钢琴老师维克的女儿、杰出的钢琴家克拉拉相爱，遭到维克的强烈反对。这对恋人为此作出多年不懈的斗争直至诉诸法律，终以胜诉为果而于1839年圆满成婚。1840年以后舒曼的钢琴作品大为减少，创作中心从钢琴转向声乐、交响乐和室内乐等其他领域。1843年舒曼出任莱比锡音乐学院教师，克拉拉则成为舒曼钢琴作品的第一演释者。
